Offa's Dyke is an ancient linear earthwork which lies partly in Flintshire. Offa's Dyke is named after Offa, the Anglo-Saxon king of Mercia, who is traditionally believed to have ordered its construction. Although its precise original purpose is debated, it delineated the border between Anglian Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms of Powys and Gwent. A well-defined part of Offa's Dyke (this section is also known as Whitford Dyke) passes to the east of Marian in Flintshire. This part of Offa's Dyke is within the council area of Flintshire.
