Odda's Chapel, Gloucestershire
Odda's Chapel is an 11th-century chantry chapel near Deerhurst, Gloucestershire. The chapel has been dated to 1056 by the discovery nearby in 1675 of Odda's Stone, a Latin inscription of the dedication of the chapel. The chapel was ordered by Earl Odda for the soul of his brother Ælfric. With the abolition of chantry chapels in the 1540s the chapel ceased to be used. In the late 16th century the chapel building was re-used as part of a timber-framed farmhouse and knowledge of it faded. In 1865 Rev. George Butterworth deduced from a chronicle of Tewkesbury Abbey and from the existence of Odda's Stone that there had been a chantry chapel in Deerhurst. In 1885 during repairs to Abbot's Court a blocked Anglo-Saxon window was discovered hidden behind plaster. In 1965 the chapel was "disentangled" from Abbot's Court farmhouse. It is now in the care of English Heritage. It is within the council area of Tewkesbury (Gloucestershire).
