Nymans Estate, Sussex
Nymans Estate is a historic estate, country house and renowned English country garden, located near Handcross, Sussex. The estate was bought by Ludwig Ernest Wilhelm Leonard Messel (1847–1915), a member of a German Jewish banking family, in 1890. He transformed the previous Regency house into a German-style wood-beam structure. After 1915, Ludwig's son Colonel Leonard Messel replaced the German-style house with a picturesque mock-mediæval stone manor, designed by Sir Walter Tapper and Norman Evill. Under Leonard Messel and his wife Maud the garden was extended and opened to the public in the 1930s. Part of the house was destroyed by fire in 1947 and remains a ruin. At Leonard Messel's death in 1953 the estate was bequeathed to the National Trust. It is within the council area of Mid Sussex (West Sussex).
