Nunhead, Surrey

Nunhead is a former hamlet that is now a metropolitan district in Surrey, forming a southern suburb of London. The earliest reference, to 'Nunn-head', is from 1583. The hamlet can be seen, as 'Nonehead' on 18th-century maps. The hamlet lay in the ancient parish of Camberwell. All Saints Cemetery (now Nunhead Cemetery) opened in 1840. In 1834 the Girdlers Company built the Beeston's Gift Almshouses, an extant terrace of seven Tudor-style cottages. The Metropolitan Beer and Wine Trade Association built further almshouses on the edge of Nunhead Green in 1853. Nunhead Junction station opened in 1871 and the district was largely built up in the 1870s and 1880s. The area is within the council area of Southwark.
