Nuneaton, Warwickshire
Nuneaton is a market town in Warwickshire, on the River Anker. Originally a small riverside settlement known as Etone, Nuneaton gained its name from a mediæval nunnery which was established in the 12th century. It later developed into an important industrial town due to ribbon weaving and coal mining. The town is famous for its association with Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot), who based many locations in her works on places in or near her native Nuneaton. The town is within the council area of Nuneaton and Bedworth (Warwickshire).
