Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
Nottingham is a city and the county town of Nottinghamshire. Nottingham's origins lie in an Anglo-Saxon settlement, 'Snotingaham', on a sandstone hill commanding a crossing of the River Trent. This later became one of the five boroughs of the Danelaw. The Norman's established a new borough to its west around Nottingham Castle. The space between the two was subsequently built on and the Old Market Square became and remains the focus of Nottingham. Nottingham is famed worldwide for its links with the legend of Robin Hood. During the Industrial Revolution it obtained international recognition for its lace-making and bicycle industries. It was granted its city charter as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria in 1897. The city is within the council area of Nottingham.
