Northam, Devon
Northam is a market town, lying between the estuary of the River Torridge and the sea in the north of Devon. The town is believed to have Saxon origins. It was the site of the Battle of Northam (1069) in which a Norman army defeated the sons of Harold Godwinson. The Church of St Margaret of Antioch (C of E) is mainly 15th-century while the lower part of the tower is from an older Norman church. Northam was the basis of an urban district from 1895-1974. Northam Town Hall dates from 1934. The town is within the council area of Torridge (Devon).
