Northallerton, Yorkshire

Northallerton is a market town in Yorkshire, in the North Riding. It lies in the Vale of Mowbray. There has been a settlement at Northallerton since Roman times. The town became a centre of religious affairs after King William II granted land here to the Bishop of Durham. Northallerton was established as a market town in 1200. The Battle of the Standard, sometimes called the Battle of Northallerton, took place on 22 August 1138 on nearby Cowton Moor. English forces under William of Aumale repelled a Scottish army led by King David I of Scotland. The town is within the council area of North Yorkshire.
