North Woolwich, Kent / Essex
North Woolwich is an urban area to the south of East Ham, lying on the River Thames partly in Kent and partly in Essex. The settlement developed in a small part of Woolwich parish (Kent) north of the River Thames, following the arrival of the railway in 1847 and the introduction of a steam ferry service to Woolwich across the river. The settlement soon spread into Essex, with entrepreneur William Holland opening the North Woolwich Gardens (now the Royal Victoria Gardens) in 1853. Industry followed. The Woolwich foot tunnel opened in 1912. The area is within the council area of Newham.
