North Hams, Devon

The North Hams is an ancient region of Devon, comprising the fertile farmlands between Dartmoor and the Bristol Channel Coast. The term "Hams" (from the Old English hamme, meaning sheltered or enclosed land) referred to the productive, sheltered farmlands on either side of Dartmoor. Whilst the term South Hams is still commonly used to describe the farmlands to the south of Dartmoor, the term North Hams for the territory north of Dartmoor has largely fallen out of use.
