Nine Elms, Surrey
Nine Elms is a former hamlet that is now Thames-side urban area in the east of the metropolitan district of Battersea, Surrey. Nine Elms lies between Battersea Park and Vauxhall. The hamlet lay along Nine Elms Lane, reputedly named around 1645 from a row of elm trees bordering the road. Following the opening of the London and Southampton Railway Company terminus in 1839, Nine Elms developed as an industrial area. Gilbert Scott's Battersea Power Station was developed from 1929-1955 in the west of Nine Elms. Covent Garden’s market moved to Nine Elms (as New Covent Garden) in 1974. The 21st century has seen residential developments along the riverside. The area is within the council area of Wandsworth.
