Newtownstewart, Tyrone

Newtownstewart (aka Newtown Stewart) is a village, lying on the west bank of the Strule River in County Tyrone. It is within the townland of Newtown Stewart, in the civil parish of Ardstraw. Newtownstewart Castle was built by Sir Robert Newcomen in 1615. The castle was acquired in 1629 by his son-in-law Sir William Stewart, who renamed the castle and village Newtownstewart. Newtownstewart Town Hall (1880) is in the Italianate style. The village is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
