Newtownbreda, Down

Newtownbreda is a large suburban village in County Down. It is within the townlands of Breda, Ballylenaghan Upper and Knockbreckan, in the civil parishes of Knockbreda and Drumbo. Newtownbreda began in the 18th century as a linear estate village, built by the Hill-Trevors family of Belvoir Park after they had the earlier village of Breda cleared. Knockbreda Parish Church (1737) was funded by Lady Middleton and designed by Richard Cassels. The graveyard is renowned for its impressive monuments, including mausoleums for wealthy traders. The village saw limited development in the first half of the 20th century. Since then the area east and south of the old village has seen massive suburban development including the Cairnhills and Four Winds areas, essentially forming a major suburb to the south of Belfast. The village is within the council area of Lisburn and Castlereagh.
