Newton Aycliffe, Durham

Newton Aycliffe is a town in County Durham. It was founded in 1947 under the New Towns Act of 1946 making it one of the oldest new towns in the UK. The 'Newton' refers to 'Newtown' and the 'Aycliffe' to the parish of Great Aycliffe in which much of the new town was built and the village of Aycliffe to the south of the new town. The southern part of the town comprises the Aycliffe Business Park which developed from wartime Royal Ordnance Factory 59 whose workers became famous as the "Aycliffe Angels". The town is within the council area of County Durham.
