Newstead Abbey, Nottinghamshire
Newstead Abbey is a former Augustinian priory and later country house near Newstead, Nottinghamshire. The priory of St Mary of Newstead, a house of Augustinian Canons, was founded by Henry II as one of many penances he paid following the murder of Thomas Becket. The house was dissolved in 1539 and granted to Sir John Byron of Colwick, who started its conversion to a country house. The house became the ancestral home of the poet Lord Byron (1788-1824) although he did not live there for any extended period. It is within the council area of Gedling (Nottinghamshire).
