Newington, Surrey
Newington is a former village that is now a metropolitan district in Surrey, forming a southern suburb of London. The village grew up form around the 12th century, lying to the south of Southwark, on the Roman Road from London to Chichester. Newington remained a farming village until the late 18th century when a set of new roads, with their junction in Newington (at the place now known as Elephant and Castle), saw farmland sold for housing. The 19th century saw increasingly dense housebuilding. Trinity church was built in 1824 and the surrounding square was then laid out with smart terraced houses. The scientist Michael Faraday was born in Newington Butts, in 1791. From 1900-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish of Newington was included within Southwark metropolitan borough. The district is within the council area of Southwark.
