New Romney, Kent

New Romney is a small market town, located on the edge of Romney Marsh in Kent. New Romney was one of the original Cinque Ports, though it became land-locked following the Great South Coast Storm of February 1287 which redirected the River Rother. St Nicholas Church (C of E) traces its history back to Bishop Odo, brother-in-law of William the Conqueror, who founded the site in 1086. The former almshouses in West Street were founded in 1610 by John Southland and rebuilt in 1734. The town is within the council area of Shepway (Kent).
