New Mills, Derbyshire / Cheshire

New Mills is a town, lying on the River Goyt primarily in Derbyshire but partly in Cheshire. The name "New Mill" reputedly dates back to a 14th-century corn mill on the River Sett. The town developed from the late 18th century around cotton mills on the Rivers Goyt and Sett. New Mills Town Hall opened in 1871 as a public hall for the Mechanics Institute. It became a town hall in 1895 upon the creation of New Mills urban district (1895-1974). The part of the town north of the Goyt, including the Torr Top, Hidebank and High Lee areas, lies in Derbyshire. The part of the town south of the Goyt, including the Torrvale and Newtown areas, lies in Cheshire. The town is within the council area of High Peak (Derbyshire).
