New Lanark, Lanarkshire

New Lanark is a village in Lanarkshire. New Lanark was founded in 1786 by David Dale, who built cotton mills and housing for the mill workers. New Lanark became a successful business and an epitome of utopian living as well as an early example of a planned settlement. The mills closed in 1968. The village is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and major tourist site. The village is within the council area of City of Glasgow.
