New Alresford, Hampshire

New Alresford is a market town in Hampshire. The town was founded in the 12th century as a "new town" (Novum Forum) by Bishop Henri de Blois on the main road from Alton to Winchester to exploit local wool and agricultural trade. A fire in 1689 destroyed much of the mediæval town, with many of the Georgian buildings which replaced it remaining today. The 13th-century church of St John the Baptist (C of E) was rebuilt in 1898 by Sir Arthur Blomfield in the Norman gothic perpendicular style. The town is within the council area of Winchester (Hampshire).
