Navan Fort, Armagh
Navan Fort is an ancient hillfort and ceremonial site, located in the townland of Navan, near the town of Armagh, County Armagh. The fort is a large circular hilltop enclosure marked by a bank and ditch, inside which is a circular mound and the remains of a ring barrow. The Irish name of Navan Fort is Eamhain Mhacha. The second element refers to the goddess Macha. However, the overall meaning of the name is unclear. According to tradition Navan Fort was one of the great royal sites of pre-Christian Gaelic Ireland and the capital of the Ulaidh. It features prominently in Irish mythology, especially in the tales of the Ulster Cycle. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.
