Mên-an-Tol, Cornwall

The Mên-an-Tol is a small formation of prehistoric standing stones near Madron, Cornwall. The Mên-an-Tol consists of three upright granite stones: a round stone with its middle holed out with two standing stones to each side, in front of and behind the hole. The function of this enigmatic stone group has been the subject of numerous suggestions including: an astronomical observatory; part of a burial chamber; and part of a stone circle. It has attracted considerable folk belief. Traditionally children were passed through the hole as a cure for rickets. The monument is within the council area of Cornwall.
Historic England Scheduled Monument 1004641.
