Muckamore, Antrim

Muckamore is a village in County Antrim. It is within the townland of Muckamore, in the civil parish of Grange of Muckamore. Muckamore Priory is believed to have been a priory of Augustinian Canons founded by followers of John de Courcy before 1283, possibly on the site of a 6th century monastery. The priory was dissolved in 1564. A house, named Muckamore Abbey, was built on the demesne in the early 19th century. During the 19th century, Muckamore's position along the south bank of the Six Mile Water led to it becoming a major site of the linen industry. Muckamore Abbey Hospital opened to the south of the village in 1949. The modern village is a mix of suburban housing, retail outlets and industrial estates. The village is within the council area of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
