Moretonhampstead, Devon
Moretonhampstead is a market town, situated on the north-eastern edge of Dartmoor in Devon. King John granted a weekly market and annual fair in 1207. The town grew steadily through the Middle Ages, based on the wool trade, and remained prosperous until the end of the 17th century. In the 18th century it became a coaching stop on the Exeter to Plymouth coaching route. The town is known for its granite buildings, including the 15th-century St. Andrew’s Church (C of E) and 17th-century almshouses. The town is within the council area of Teignbridge (Devon).
