Monkton, Durham
Monkton is a suburban village to the south of Jarrow, County Durham. The origins of Monkton date back to at least AD 1074, when the Bishop of Durham granted land here to monks involved with the reconstruction of St Paul’s Monastery at Jarrow. It grew to become a mainly agricultural settlement. Industrialisation brought change; waste products from the smelting of iron ore for Palmers Shipyard and Iron Company in Jarrow were dumped to the north to form a huge slag heap ('the Crusher'). The slag heap was cleared and the land reclaimed to create Campbell Park. Some stone houses of the old Monkton village survive including old farmhouses and an eighteenth-century house called Bede Cottage. The village is within the council area of South Tyneside.
