Monkstown, Antrim
Monkstown is a former village that is now an urban area in Newtownabbey, County Antrim. It is within the townlands of Monkstown and Croghfern, in the civil parish of Carnmoney. Prior to the mid 19th century Monsktown townland was almost entirely rural. In the mid 19th century, a small settlement of Monkstown developed near the flax spinning mills (later the Monkstown Weaving Works) on the Three Mile Water. The opening of Monkstown Railway Station in 1905 saw some limited further development. The instigation of the new town of Newtownabbey in 1958 then saw large-scale housing and industrial development. Monkstown remains centred on the crossroads around which the hamlet first developed, though little remains from the era prior to the new town developments. The Abbey Presbyterian Church, built in 1970, lies at the crossroads. The Monkstown Industrial Estate lies south of the river in Croghfern townland. The Monkstown area is within the council area of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
