Monea Castle, Fermanagh

Monea Castle is an 17th-century castle in the townland of Castletown Monea, County Fermanagh. It was built for Malcolm Hamilton and completed in 1619. The bawn was built in 1622. It is considered one of the finest of Fermanagh's plantation castles. It was taken by the Irish in 1641, but retaken by the planters and in 1688 was the residence of the Governor of Enniskillen. It is believed to have been burned in the 18th century and abandoned. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Fermanagh and Omagh.
