Moira, Down

Moira is a town in County Down. It is within the townland of Carnalbanagh East, in the civil parish of Moira. The development of the town is beleived to have begun during the Plantation era, when the landowner Sir George Rawdon settled in the area. His son Sir Arthur Rawdon developed the Moira Demesne, creating Moira Castle and a vast parkland with botanical gardens. The town grew to the south of the Demesne. St John's Church (C of I) was consecrated in 1725. The present Moira Presbyterian Church dates from 2017, the first church on the site being around 1770. Moira Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church dates from 1738. Moira Methodist Church dates from 1822. Moria Castle was demolished in the early 19th century. Since the mid 20th century, Moira has seen large-scale suburban development. The town is within the council area of Lisburn and Castlereagh.
