Mitford Castle, Northumberland
Mitford Castle is an 11th-century castle in Northumberland. Prior to the 1066 Norman conquest, the castle was held by Sir John de Mitford. In 1138 it was owned by William Bartram when it was attacked by the Scots. In 1215, during the civil war in the reign of King John, the castle was seized by King John's forces and the barony stripped from Roger Bartram and given to Hugh de Balliol. The castle then withstood a siege by Scotland's Alexander II in 1216. Mitford Castle was dismantled and in 1327 was described as entirely destroyed and burnt. It is within the council area of Northumberland.
