Mitcham, Surrey
Mitcham is a suburban town in Surrey. It is recorded in Domesday as 'Michelham'. The ancient parish of Mitcham had two neighbouring settlements: Lower Mitcham around the Lower Green; and Upper Mitcham around the Upper Green. From the mid-18th century the area became known for the cultivation of aromatic plants and shrubs, including lavender, camomile, poppies, liquorice and anise. Mitcham saw industrial and suburban development from the mid 19th century into the inter-war period. From 1915-1865, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis of Mitcham urban district, a municipal borough from 1934. The church of St Peter and St Paul (1819–22) has mediæval fabric in the base of its tower. Engle House, now a school, dates from 1705. Mitcham Common provides 460 acres of open space, reaching into the heart of the town. The town is within the council area of Merton.
