Millwall, Middlesex

Millwall is a metropolitan district on the western and southern side of the Isle of Dogs, south-east Middlesex. The area was heavily industrialised in the 19th century, containing the workplaces and homes of several thousand dockside and shipbuilding workers. The Millwall Dock opened in 1868. Millwall FC was founded (as Millwall Rovers) by the workers of J.T. Morton's canning and preserve factory. The team moved south of the river in 1910. In the 1950s council blocks and maisonettes providing replacement housing for wartime destruction. Since the 1980s, Millwall has seen large-scale development of up-market apartments and warehouse conversions. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
