Milltown, Antrim

Milltown is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in the south-west of Belfast, County Antrim. It is within the townland of Ballymurphy, in the civil parish of Shankill. Milltown was a small milling settlement on the Ballymurphy Stream, dating back at least as far as the 18th century. From 1869 it became the site of Milltown Cemetery. The early 19th-century Milltown House was expanded and became the site of St Patrick's Industrial School from 1873, the school remaining on the site until 1957. Since the Second World War the mill premises, for former school and most of the earlier housing have been demolished. The name persists, not just in the cemetery but in Milltown Row and Mill Court retirement complex. Milltown is within the council area of Belfast.
