Millbank is an urban area in Westminster, Middlesex, lying on the north bank of the River Thames. The name derives from the former presence of watermills on the embanked riverside. The area was dominated by Millbank Penitentiary from 1816 until its demolition in 1892. The Royal Army Medical College (now Chelsea College of Arts) and the National Gallery of British Art (now Tate Gallery aka Tate Britain) were constructed on the site. The Millbank Estate (1897-1902) is a red-brick arts-and-crafts influenced social housing scheme. The Millbank Tower (1963) is a 390ft modernistic skyscraper. The area is within the council area of Westminster.
