Mile End, Middlesex
Mile End is a former hamlet that is now a metropolitan district forming part of the East End of London, in south-east Middlesex. Mile End developed as a hamlet along the London-Colchester Roman road, the name (earliest recording as 'La mile ende' in 1288) relating to its distance a mile from Aldgate. The area along the road saw developments from the 17th century and especially in The 19th century as the East End spread eastwards. Dr Barnardo opened the Copperfield Road Ragged School, now a museum, in 1877. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
