Middleton, Lancashire

Middleton is a town in Lancashire, standing on the River Ilk. Middleton is believed to be of great antiquity, the name first appearing in 1194. During the Middle Ages, Middleton was a centre of domestic flannel and woollen cloth production, industrial scale textile manufacture being introduced during the Industrial Revolution. The Church of St Leonard was completed in 1524, incorporating two stone arches made of stonework from an earlier Norman church. Old Boar's Head Inn, said to date from 1632, was originally a coaching inn on the road between Chester and York. The town is within the council area of Rochdale.
