Middlesbrough, Yorkshire
Middlesbrough is a large industrial town in Yorkshire, in the North Riding. Once a small farm, in 1829 a group of Quaker businessmen bought the Middlesbrough farmstead and estate, established the Middlesbrough Estate Company and developed a new coal port on the southern bank of the Tees. Ironworks, steel production and ship building followed later in the century. Whilst traditional industries have declined, the port remains one the largest in the UK. The town is within the council area of Middlesbrough.
