Michelham Priory, Sussex

Michelham Priory is the site of a former Augustinian Priory in Upper Dicker, Sussex. The Augustinian Priory of the Holy Trinity was founded at Michelham in 1229 by Gilbert de Aquila. King Edward I stayed overnight at the priory on 14 September 1302. Following the Dissolution, the church and some of the buildings were demolished. The surviving Michelham Priory house (Historic England Grade I Listed 1353289) comprises the former Refectory and the Prior's Lodgings. The priory is surrounded by a moat, spanned by a 16th-century stone bridge. Inside the moat, at the end of the bridge, stands the 15th-century Gateway or Barbican Tower (Historic England Grade I Listed 1191633). Also surviving is a timber-framed barn from around 1590. The site is within the council area of Wealden (East Sussex).
