Merton, Surrey

Merton is an ancient parish and suburban town in Surrey. Merton was a Saxon manor which later became a parish, centred on the 12th-century parish church of St Mary. Merton Priory was an English Augustinian priory founded in 1114 by Gilbert Norman, Sheriff of Surrey (dissolved in 1538). The village of Merton as a elongated settlement between the parish church and the priory site by the River Wandle. The area around the church was developed as Merton Park from the late 19th century. The area close to the former priory was developed in the inter-war period, becoming known as Merton Abbey. From 1907-1913, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis of Merton urban district. From 1913-1965, this area was combined with the ancient parish of Morden to form Merton and Morden urban district. The area is within the council area of Merton.
