Melcombe Regis, Dorset

Melcombe Regis forms the northern part of Weymouth, lying on Weymouth Harbour to the north of the River Wey in Dorset. It developed as a seaport in the 13th century and received a charter as a borough in 1268. It was joined with the borough of Weymouth in 1571, after which time the name Weymouth came to serve for them both. George III holidayed in the town holiday resort between 1789 and 1811 and is commemorated by a prominent statue on the Esplanade. Melcombe Regis is within the council area of Dorset.
