Max Gate, Dorset
Max Gate is the former home of Thomas Hardy, located on the outskirts of Dorchester, Dorset. It was designed by Hardy himself and built out of red brick in 1885 in Queen Anne style. The building work was done by his father and his brother. He lived there until his death in 1928. It was here that he wrote Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure, The Mayor of Casterbridge and much of his poetry. It is in the care of the National Trust. It is within the council area of Dorset.
