Maud Heath's Causeway, Wiltshire
Maud Heath's Causeway is a 15th-century pathway across the floodplain of the River Avon, near Langley Burrell, Wiltshire. Maud Heath gave land and property in 1474 for the construction and maintenance of a raised path from Wick Hill to Chippenham. The upkeep is still the responsibility of the Trustees, one of the oldest charities in Britain. Since 1812 the causeway closest to the River Avon has comprised 64 brick arches either side of the river. Near the east bank of the Avon is a 10ft high carved stone pillar with sundials, dated 1698, inscribed "To the memory of the worthy Maud Heath of Langly Burrell Widow who in the year of Grace 1474 for the good of travellers did in Charity bestow in Lands and houses about Eight pounds a year for ever to be laid out on the Highways and Causey leading from Wick Hill to Chippenham Clift". On Wick Hill stands Maud Heath's Monument, a 1838 statue of the eponymous lady, looking out over the river and its floodplain. The site is within the council area of Wiltshire.
