Massereene Demesne, Antrim
The Massereene Demesne is a historic estate, lying on the shores of Lough Neagh to the south of Antrim, County Antrim. The estate was established in the early 17th century by Sir Hugh Clotworthy, who acquired the lands from Sir Arthur Chichester. Sir Hugh built the first Antrim Castle (aka Massereene Castle), enlarged in 1662 by his son, John Clotworthy, 1st Viscount Massereene. In 1813, Antrim Castle was rebuilt as a three-story Georgian-Gothic castellated mansion, designed by Dublin architect, John Bowden. The castle was destroyed by fire in 1922 and finally demolished in the 1970s. The demesne, to the south of the castle, remains largely undeveloped. The estate is within the council area of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
