Marsden, Durham
Marsden is a former village which is now a suburban area at the south-east edge of South Shields, County Durham. Marsden was originally a small village, consisting of farms, cottages and a lighthouse at Souter Point. The opening of Whitburn Colliery in the 1870s led to the development of a new Marsden village, alongside the lighthouse. This was demolished in the 1960s. The name Marsden now refers to the suburban development which extents to the site of the original village. It is within the council area of South Tyneside.
