Mare & Foal, Northumberland

Mare & Foal are the remains of a Bronze Age stone circle 1½ miles north of Haltwhistle in Northumberland. The orignal circle had a diameter of about 20 feet and out of the original 15 stones, there are only 2 stones standing. The larger stone (the Mare) stands 5 feet high, the other (the Foal) 3 feet high, at a distance apart of 16 feet. The socket holes of the other stones survive below ground as buried features. Hadrian's Wall lies just to the north. It is within the council area of Northumberland.
