Marazion, Cornwall

Marazion (aka Market Jew) is a seaside resort town on the southern coast of Cornwall. Marazion is one of the oldest chartered towns in England. The first charter of incorporation was granted by Henry III in 1257 and was reaffirmed in 1595 by Elizabeth I. At low water a causeway links the town to St Michael's Mount and the town has long been a centre for pilgrims to the Benedictine Monastery on the Mount. Fishing, tin and copper mining were key industries. The coming of the railways saw the town become a tourist destination. The town has an active community of artists and numerous art galleries. The alternative name of Market Jew is a corruption of the Cornish phrase Marghasjewe, meaning "Thursday Market". The town is within the council area of Cornwall.
