Manside Cross, Northumberland
Manside Cross is a socket stone of a wayside mediæval cross in Northumberland. It is located at Gunner's Box and is rectangular in shape, measuring 35 by 30 inches and 20 inches high. There is a socket hole in the centre 8 inches deep. In the socket there is a stone shaft which is thought to be the remains of the mediæval cross reused in post-mediæval times as a boundary stone when modern initials were carved onto one of its surfaces. Manside Cross is first mentioned in the Border Survey of 1604 when it is referred to as Manns' Head, and is also depicted on later maps. It is within the council area of Northumberland.
