Malton is a market town in Yorkshire, in the North Riding. It lies on the north bank of the River Derwent which here forms the border with the East Riding. Across the Derwent, in the East Riding, is Norton-on-Derwent. The town stands on the site of a former Roman settlement. The defence lines of the Roman fort can be seen in Orchard Fields. Malton Town Hall, designed in the neoclassical style, dates from 1749. The Talbot Hotel dates from the early 17th century. The town is within the council area of North Yorkshire.
