Malmesbury, Wiltshire

Malmesbury is a market town town in Wiltshire, in the southern Cotswolds. Once the site of an Iron Age fort, it is the oldest borough in England, created around AD 880 by charter from Alfred the Great. At the heart of the town is its vast and ancient church, Malmesbury Abbey, the bulk of which forms a rare survival of the dissolution of the monasteries. Æthelstan, the first king of all England, was buried in Malmesbury Abbey in 939. The town is within the council area of Wiltshire.
