Makerfield, Lancashire

Makerfield is a former barony and traditional area in southern Lancashire. The area developed from the pre-Norman hundred of Newton. Following the Conquest, the region became the Barony or Fee of Makerfield, a powerful feudal estate, with Newton serving as its judicial and administrative centre. The historic barony was held for centuries by prominent Lancashire families. The barony lost its practical function during the 19th century and the last vestiges of its legal relevance disappeared under the Law of Property Act 1922. Its name persists in the place names Ashton-in-Makerfield, Ince-in-Makerfield, and Newton-in-Makerfield. The area lies within the council areas of Wigan and St Helens.
