Maida Vale, Middlesex
Maida Vale is a metropolitan suburb in the north-west of Paddington, Middlesex. The name originally applied to the stretch of Watling Street (Edgware Road) on which the Hero of Maida public house opened c.1807 (the hero being Major-General Sir John Stuart who led British troops to victory over the French on the plain of Maida in 1806). This stretch of road was first known as Maida Hill and then, from 1828, as 'Maida Vale'. The area to the west of the Edgware Road was developed during the 19th century, the whole area coming to be known as Maida Vale. It is within the council area of Westminster.
